107.8 Academy FM, Thanet’s community radio station, began broadcasting at 12 noon on 5th April 2010 (Easter Monday). It is broadcast 24 hours a day from Ramsgate’s Marlowe Academy under a five year license awarded by OFCOM.
The station is managed by Pete Willson, well known to local radio audiences in Thanet, with support from Deputy Station Manager Mike Stevens, a small army of volunteers and crucially from staff and students at The Marlowe Academy, for whom this presents an outstanding opportunity to get hands-on experience in the technical, presentational and business aspects of running a real-live radio station.
Students gain an insight into how to prepare and present radio programmes, how to operate equipment and generally how to run a business. The station is a registered charity and the students have a key role to play in helping generate the funds to maintain the operation, the Academy itself having specialist Creative Arts and Enterprise status.
