GCSE Results 2007

MARLOWE  ACADEMY  GCSE  RESULTS  SHOW FURTHER

SIGNIFICANT  IMPROVEMENT

  • 40% of pupils achieve 5 or more GCSE A*-C grades
  • Sixth form set to grow by two thirds
  • Principal hails further advance towards achieving targets

Passes in grades A*- C at GCSE level have more than doubled at Ramsgate’s Marlowe Academy since it opened two years ago, when compared with the performance in 2005 at the school it replaced. Today (Thursday 23 August) sees the release of grades for the latest academic year which show that 40% of pupils have achieved five grades A* - C. Just ten years ago equivalent figures for The Ramsgate School stood at only 1%, and even five years ago only 4%. Numbers of passes with five A* - C grades including Maths and English have also improved from 2% in 2005 to 7% in 2007.

The continuing improvement in the school’s performance is one of which Principal Ian Johnson is understandably proud. He says: “I believe these results show that we have transformed our students’ attitude towards learning, and that we are now able to give them the life chances that they never previously had.”

The improved GCSE results are underlined by other developments at the school that include a significant growth in numbers entering its sixth form, which in the coming academic year will number over 150 students. It is also expected that six students from The Marlowe Academy will progress to university in September. Ian Johnson continues: “A university education would just not have been on the agenda for these students a couple of years ago, and we are very proud that we are now able to work together with youngsters and their parents to raise aspirations and achievement. We know that we have some way to go to improve in areas like Maths and English, but even here we are making progress and we have a clear strategy to bring about further improvements.”
